About this lesson and its scene
Ask to discuss a planned absence, give the date, note the affected work, and confirm your workplace's next step without giving labor-law advice.

To start a planned time-off conversation, say 休みについて相談したいです (“I would like to discuss time off”), then give the requested date or period. Identify affected work and a proposed handoff, and ask which formal application or approval step the workplace requires. This lesson does not determine leave entitlement or approval.

Conversation, handoff, formal request

Handle sensitive reasons appropriately
Ask what information the formal process requires. You do not need to volunteer a detailed private history in an open team channel. If urgent illness, caregiving, harassment, disability, or legal rights are involved, use the appropriate HR, union, public labor consultation, or qualified adviser rather than relying only on this general phrase lesson.
Record requested dates, handoff, submission reference, and status. Notify affected coworkers only according to workplace practice and after the status is clear.
Change or withdraw a pending request
If plans change before approval, say 申請内容を変更したいです and identify the existing request number or dates. Ask whether to edit, cancel, or submit again. Do not create duplicate requests and assume the newest one automatically wins.
If approval arrives with conditions, repeat them: handoff owner, partial-day time, contact availability, or required document. If the request is not approved, ask for the recorded status and appropriate internal consultation path without turning the language lesson into legal advice.
For an unexpected same-day absence, use the workplace’s emergency notification route rather than treating it as the same process as planned leave. State immediate facts, availability, affected work, and when you can update the team.
Separate the language request from leave rights and policy
This lesson teaches communication, not labor-law rights or company policy. For the actual entitlement, required notice, documentation, and dispute process, use current workplace rules and qualified official support. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare lists current multilingual inquiry and call centers and foreign-worker consultation services. Source boundary last checked: July 12, 2026.
Make the request and preserve the handoff
- State a requested date, not a presumed approval.
- Plan affected work and handoff.
- Use the formal application channel.
- Track request status accurately and protect private information.
Protect deadlines and ownership around an absence
A leave request is easier to act on when affected work, handoff, and timing are explicit. Use the deadline lesson to identify the risk and the help lesson to request a bounded transfer instead of leaving ownership vague.
