To confirm a work deadline, ask 締め切りはいつですか (“When is the deadline?”), then clarify the calendar date, exact time, time zone if relevant, and expected deliverable. Repeat whether the due item is a draft, review copy, or final version, and record the agreement in the normal team channel.

Friday is not a complete deadline

Leo hears Friday and assumes the final file is due at the end of the day.
Leo金曜日ですね。
Friday, right?

Maya explains that a draft is needed Friday morning for review before the final version.
Maya金曜日の朝は下書きです。
Friday morning is the draft.

Leo separates the draft and final milestones with exact times.
Leo下書きは金曜日の九時、完成版は月曜日ですね。
The draft is Friday at nine, and the final is Monday, right?

He writes the two milestones and the delivery location in the project note.

Report risk before the deadline
If delivery may slip, say このままだと間に合わない可能性があります (“At this rate, there is a possibility it will not be ready”) and give the blocked part, current status, and earliest realistic option. Do not wait until after the deadline to reveal a known risk.
Ask which tradeoff is authorized: 範囲を減らしますか、時間を変えますか (“Should we reduce the scope or change the time?”). A coworker may not have authority to change either, so confirm the responsible person. The deadline task is complete when date, time, deliverable, location, owner, and any approved change are recorded.
Connect dependencies to the deadline
Ask この作業の前に、何が必要ですか (“What is needed before this work?”) and だれの確認を待っていますか (“Whose review are we waiting for?”). A deadline can remain fixed while an input arrives late, so record both the dependency date and the final due date.
If someone says できれば木曜日 (“Thursday if possible”), clarify whether it is a preference, internal target, or required deadline. If the answer is 遅くても金曜日の正午, record Friday noon as the latest time and Thursday as the target. Do not replace nuanced timing with a single guessed date.
For recurring work, confirm whether “by Friday” applies every week, this week only, or a particular calendar date. Link the deadline note to the task ID or deliverable name so another Friday does not inherit it accidentally.
Turn the deadline into a shared plan
- Friday alone is not a complete deadline.
- Confirm deliverable state and submission location.
- Record each milestone separately.
- Report risks before the deadline and confirm authorized changes.
Connect the deadline to absence and completion reporting
A time-off request may change the handoff before the deadline; a completion report proves what was delivered afterward. Practice both sides so the date remains tied to an owner and a visible deliverable.
- Request time off and confirm the workplace process
- Report completion, delivery, and remaining checks

Try the real-world task
Record one unambiguous workplace deadline.
Ready means:
- I can ask when the task is due.
- I can distinguish draft and final delivery.
- I can repeat the agreed date and time.
