Official JLPT
Five test levels, with N5 as the easiest.
The official test assesses language knowledge together with reading and listening. It does not directly test speaking or writing.
Kotoba Street study groups · 2 available
Kotoba Street currently offers two editorial study groups: Pre-N5 foundations for scripts and sound, and N5-oriented lessons for beginner grammar and practical communication. They are not an official JLPT syllabus or a complete exam-preparation course.

Our labels organize this published lesson collection. Practical speaking and writing tasks may appear because the site teaches real-life use, not because every task is tested.
The JLPT no longer publishes a comprehensive official list of vocabulary, kanji, and grammar items. Use the official level descriptions, item types, and sample questions for exam decisions—not this site's lesson tags. Read the official explanation.
Choose your starting point
You can leave this classification at any time. The Roadmap, Lessons catalog, Grammar guide, and Situations page organize the same portfolio for different decisions.
Kotoba Street label · Pre-N5
Build scripts and sound first. Choose this group if kana, the writing systems, or Japanese sound timing still slows down every example.
Official level, editorial collection · N5
Practice beginner Japanese alongside N5 study. Choose this group if you can work with basic kana and want grammar choices, reusable phrases, guided situations, and essential interactions.
