To ask a coworker for focused help, first check availability: 少し手伝っていただけますか (“Could you help me for a moment?”). Name the task, show what you already tried, and identify the exact blocked step. Then agree on who will do what and by when.

Ask for one blocked step

Leo sends a broad message saying the entire project is impossible.
Leo全部分かりません。手伝ってください。
I do not understand any of it. Please help.

Maya asks what he completed and which decision blocks the next step.
Mayaどこまでできましたか。
How far did you get?

Leo shows the file and identifies one unclear field.
Leoここまでできました。この欄だけ分かりません。
I got this far. Only this field is unclear.

They agree that Maya will show one example and Leo will finish the file.
Leo例を確認して、次は私がやります。
I will check the example, then I will do the next part.

The same words can sound different across hierarchy and team culture. Use the workplace’s established channel and adjust politeness with a trusted colleague or manager.
Record the agreed help without transferring the whole task
After the conversation, write a one-line action note: Maya checks field B by three; Leo completes and sends the file by five. Share it through the normal team channel when appropriate. This catches different interpretations of 確認します, which can mean “I will check” rather than “I will approve” or “I will complete it.”
If the helper changes the task scope, deadline, or owner, pause and confirm authority: この変更は担当者にも確認しますか (“Should we also confirm this change with the person responsible?”). If the block reveals a wider risk, report it rather than hiding it inside a personal favor.
Close the loop after using the help: show the result, say what changed, and ask only for the agreed check. This builds independence and prevents repeated unbounded requests.
Thank the coworker specifically—例を見せてくれて、ありがとうございました—and update any shared task status so others do not duplicate the same help.
Ask for bounded help and keep task ownership
- Check availability before asking.
- Show progress and one precise block.
- Accept referral, delay, or limited help.
- Confirm owner, deadline, and follow-up.
Turn help into a confirmed action and deadline
After someone offers help, restate the action, owner, and timing so the task does not silently transfer. Then connect the agreed step to the exact deliverable and deadline.

Try the real-world task
Resolve one specific work blockage with a coworker.
Ready means:
- I can identify the task and blocked step.
- I can ask whether the person has time.
- I can repeat who will do what next.
