To report a lost item, say [物]をなくしました, then give four facts: where you last had it, when you noticed it was missing, what it looks like, and any identifying details. If you lost it inside a station, shop, or other facility, start with that facility. If it was on the street or the place is unknown, ask the police about a lost-property report.

Four facts make the report useful

Kotoba Station service counter
  1. Outside a small station shop, Leo checks an empty pocket and holds a blank shopping sleeve; no wallet is present.

Leo checks his pocket after leaving a shop and cannot find his wallet.

    Leo

    財布がありません。

    My wallet is not here.

  2. Leo checks his clothing beside three disordered shop, train, and bench pictogram cards without recording a timeline.

He checks several likely places without recording where or when he last saw the wallet.

    Leo

Where did I last have it?

  3. Maya organizes shop, clock, black-wallet silhouette, and blank-card content tiles while Leo holds an empty report sleeve.

Maya organizes the four facts Leo should report: last place, time, color, and contents.

    Maya

    最後の場所・時間・色・中身

    Last place, time, color, contents

  4. At the station service counter, Leo begins a completely blank report form as a non-recurring employee points to the field; no recovered item appears.

Leo gives the facts and understands which form to complete.

    Leo

    黒い財布です。駅で落としたかもしれません。

It is a black wallet. I may have dropped it at the station.

Report what is missing

Opening the report

saifu o nakushimashitaI lost my walletState the missing item
sumātofon o otoshimashitaI dropped my smartphoneUse when dropping it is likely
wasuremono o shimashitaI left something behindUse for an item left in a place
otoshimono no madoguchi wa doko desu kaWhere is the lost-property counter?Ask inside a facility
ishitsu todoke o dashitai desuI would like to file a lost-property reportAsk at a police station or police box

Do not spend the opening explaining every event. Name the item first so staff can direct you to the relevant desk or search category.

Say where and when

Place and time facts
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
eki de otoshita kamo shiremasenI may have dropped it at the stationThe place is possible, not certain
densha no naka de mimashitaI saw it on the trainLast confirmed place
gogo sanji goro desuIt was around 3 p.m.Approximate time
kyō, kizukimashitaI noticed todayTime discovered missing

The National Police Agency advises giving where and when the item was lost because those facts are used to cross-reference found property. If you are unsure, distinguish “last seen” from “noticed missing” instead of inventing an exact loss time.

Describe identifying details

Do not say a full PIN or expose more sensitive information than staff need. If a bank card, credit card, or phone is missing, contact the issuer or operator promptly about suspending access; a language lesson and lost-property report do not secure the account.

A lost-property report records the claim and supports matching; it does not prove the loss or guarantee a search or recovery. Procedures and online availability differ by prefecture.

Start with the facility, then use the official lost-property route

Source check (August 11, 2026): use the National Police Agency lost-property guidance for the current reporting process. The NPA route guide also directs people who lost something in a particular facility to start with that facility. Ask qualified staff about an unresolved language or process-safety question.

Give a lost-item report staff can act on

  • Name the item before giving the story.
  • Separate the last-seen time from the time you noticed the loss.
  • Give objective identifying details.
  • Follow the facility or police process, and separately protect cards or devices.

Carry the report from a facility to the police desk

Start with the station, store, hotel, or other facility where the item may have been lost. If staff direct you to the police, reuse the same facts—item, place, time, and identifying details—without inventing certainty.
