When a train is disrupted, first identify the affected line and current state. 電車が遅れています means “The train is delayed,” while 運転を見合わせています means service is currently suspended. Then use the live board or staff answer to choose one next action: wait, take the next train, or use another route.

The useful detail is the next action

Leo hears a long announcement and recognizes only the station name.
LeoDid they say my station?

He waits at the usual platform without checking which line is affected.
Leoここで待ちます。
I will wait here.

Maya points to the affected line and asks staff for one alternative.
Maya別の行き方はありますか。
Is there another way to go?

Leo repeats the new transfer point and follows the live signs.
Leo地下鉄で中央駅ですね。
By subway to Chuo Station, right?

Recognize delay and suspended service
Announcements often contain a cause, location, apology, and estimate. As a beginner, listen first for the service state and line name.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
電車が遅れています | densha ga okurete imasu | The train is delayed | Service may still be moving |
運転を見合わせています | unten o miawasete imasu | Service is currently suspended | Trains are not operating on the affected section now |
運転を再開しました | unten o saikai shimashita | Service has resumed | A current resumption notice |
一部区間 | ichibu kukan | part of the line / a section | The whole line may not be affected |
Do not treat 遅れ and 運転見合わせ as interchangeable. A delayed train may arrive late; suspended service means you need current information before assuming a train will depart. Check the line name, direction, and affected section on the operator’s live display.
Ask about the expected wait
Use an estimate as current information, not as a promise. Conditions can change after staff answer.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
どのくらい遅れていますか | dono kurai okurete imasu ka | About how delayed is it? | Ask for the current delay |
次の電車はいつですか | tsugi no densha wa itsu desu ka | When is the next train? | Ask for the next available service |
運転再開はいつですか | unten saikai wa itsu desu ka | When will service resume? | Ask; the answer may be unknown |
まだ分かりません | mada wakarimasen | It is not known yet | A likely answer when there is no reliable estimate |
If staff say 十時ごろの予定です, the natural meaning is “It is currently expected around ten.” Repeat the time with 予定ですね so you preserve the uncertainty: 十時ごろの予定ですね.
Confirm the affected line and direction
The announcement may concern a different line sharing the station. Point to the line on a map or display and ask a yes/no question.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
この線が遅れていますか | kono sen ga okurete imasu ka | Is this line delayed? | Point to the line |
上りも止まっていますか | nobori mo tomatte imasu ka | Are inbound trains also stopped? | Confirm the direction; local labels vary |
東京駅まで行けますか | Tōkyō-eki made ikemasu ka | Can I get as far as Tokyo Station? | Ask about a reachable point |
どこから動いていますか | doko kara ugoite imasu ka | From where are trains running? | Ask about an operating section |
Line colors, direction labels, and service patterns differ by operator. Keep the written line name and destination visible while you ask.
Ask for one alternative route
別の行き方はありますか asks whether another route exists. It does not guarantee that the route is included in your ticket or that substitute transportation applies.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
別の行き方はありますか | betsu no ikikata wa arimasu ka | Is there another way to go? | Ask staff for an option |
地下鉄で行けます | chikatetsu de ikemasu | You can go by subway | A possible route answer |
中央駅で乗り換えてください | Chūō-eki de norikaete kudasai | Please transfer at Chuo Station | Listen for the transfer point |
この切符で乗れますか | kono kippu de noremasu ka | Can I ride with this ticket? | Ask rather than assuming fare coverage |
Terms such as 振替輸送 refer to operator arrangements with conditions that vary by incident, route, and ticket. Follow current operator notices and staff instructions. This lesson teaches the conversation, not eligibility for any particular alternative service.
Current-information boundary
Delay length, restart time, affected section, and substitute transport can change minute by minute. Use the railway operator’s current website, app, boards, and staff instructions as the operational source. Never rely on an example route or time from this lesson.
Boundary rechecked August 11, 2026; ask station staff about an unresolved language or transport-safety question.
Leave the delay search with one workable route
- Distinguish a delay from suspended service.
- Identify the affected line, direction, and section.
- Treat a restart estimate as provisional.
- Confirm one next action and its transfer or ticket condition.
Replan the journey after a delay
Once you know which line and direction are affected, turn the reply into a route decision. Ask for the first walking step if you must change stations, or verify the replacement train before boarding.
How do you ask how delayed a train is in Japanese?
Ask どのくらい遅れていますか (“About how delayed is it?”) for the current state, or 次の電車はいつですか for the next available service. Treat any estimate as current information rather than a promise, and accept まだ分かりません as a complete answer — during a disruption, staff often genuinely do not know.
What does unten o miawasete imasu mean?
運転を見合わせています means service is currently suspended on the affected section — trains are not operating now. It is not interchangeable with 電車が遅れています, where a late train may still arrive.
Check the line, direction, and section on the operator’s live display, and listen for 運転を再開しました before assuming a departure.

Try the real-world task
Respond to a disrupted train journey with one confirmed next step.
Ready means:
- I can recognize the words for delay or suspended service.
- I can ask about the expected wait or next service.
- I can confirm one alternative route or decision.
