For a basic taxi ride, show the destination in Japanese and say この住所までお願いします (“To this address, please”). Confirm the place the driver repeats, request a safe stopping point, and state your payment method. A map pin or written address is part of the communication, not a last resort.

The address makes the destination clear

A taxi near Kotoba Station
  1. Belted Leo names the hotel with an open-hand gesture while his phone stays face-down and the driver glances back through the mirror.

Rain is heavy, so Leo enters a taxi and says only an English hotel name.

    Leo

    Kotoba Garden Hotel, please.

  2. The same stopped-taxi driver presents two separate hotel-entrance pictogram cards while Leo repeats the name without location evidence.

The driver knows two properties with similar names and looks uncertain.

    Driver

    どちらですか。

    Which one?

  3. Leo shows a phone with one map pin, one hotel-entrance pictogram, and blank address lines while the driver confirms without taking it.

Leo switches to shared evidence: the Japanese address and the entrance marked on his map.

    Leo

    この住所までお願いします。

    To this address, please.

  4. At the rainy hotel entrance, Leo stands beside the stopped taxi as the driver returns one blank receipt and Leo keeps his payment card.

At arrival, Leo confirms the entrance and requests a receipt.

    Leo

    ここで大丈夫です。領収書をお願いします。

Here is fine. A receipt, please.

The driver may repeat the station exit, hotel branch, neighborhood, or building. Compare that reply with what is written on your map. If it does not match, say 違います (“That is different”) and show the address again.

Understand route questions without guessing

You may be asked about a route or toll road. If you do not have a preference, you can say so instead of choosing a route you do not understand.

Fares, routes, and payment options vary. Use the live meter, posted information, and the driver’s response instead of treating a lesson example as a price or service guarantee.

Ask to stop at a safe place

Use ここで大丈夫です when the driver can stop safely. The driver may continue a short distance because stopping is restricted or unsafe.

Complete the taxi ride from address to receipt

  • Pair the destination phrase with a complete Japanese address or map.
  • Confirm the driver’s repeated place before the ride continues.
  • Do not assume one route, fare, or payment method applies everywhere.
  • Ask to stop safely, then complete payment and close with thanks.

Reuse destination evidence on foot and by bus

A written place name or map pin also helps when asking a passerby for the first direction or checking a bus before boarding. Reuse the same habit: show the destination, listen for the deciding detail, and repeat it.
