At the Kotoba Market checkout, Maya holds a blank card away from a pending terminal while a distinct male cashier indicates cash, card, and phone methods for this register.

At checkout, ask カードは使えますか (“Can I use a card?”), then name one payment method and wait for the terminal or cashier instruction. Confirm the amount before tapping or inserting, choose one-time or installment handling only when asked and understood, and check the completion message and receipt.

Accepted does not mean completed

Kotoba Market checkout
  1. Maya brings a blank card toward the still-pending terminal while the distinct male cashier raises a wait hand.

Maya sees a card logo and tries to tap before the cashier has selected the payment method on the terminal.

    Maya

The logo means I can tap now.

  2. The cashier points to the register's abstract amount blocks and separate cash, card, and phone-wave choices while Maya lowers her card.

The cashier asks her to wait and confirms the amount and payment type.

  3. Maya selects card plus one solid payment block and matches the abstract amount patterns on register and terminal before completion.

Maya states the method and checks the amount displayed on the terminal.

    Maya

    カードで。一回払いでお願いします。

    By card. One payment, please.

  4. After the terminal shows one mint completion circle, the cashier gives exactly one blank receipt and Maya stores it in her wallet sleeve.

Installments and revolving payment can create financial obligations. This lesson does not recommend or explain their costs; use the card issuer’s written terms.

Distinguish when the money is taken

The checkout word カード does not tell you whether a transaction uses credit, debit, or stored value. Ask the issuer’s materials, not the cashier, about account timing and fees. For language purposes, recognize three broad descriptions:

  • 前払い means value is paid or loaded before use.
  • 即時払い means the linked balance is generally debited at the transaction time.
  • 後払い means payment is billed later under the provider’s terms.

These descriptions do not establish the actual settlement date, exchange rate, refund timing, or protection for a specific product. If those details matter, pause the purchase and check the provider’s written terms.

Repair a duplicate or uncertain result

If the terminal times out, do not immediately tap again. Say 決済はできていますか (“Did the payment go through?”) and show the non-sensitive result screen. Compare the store receipt with your official payment record. This lesson cannot classify a pending entry as final, cancelled, or refundable.

If you see the wrong amount before authorization, say 金額が違います。取り消してください. If you notice it afterward, keep the receipt and ask どこに問い合わせればいいですか (“Where should I inquire?”). The correct contact may be the store, card issuer, or payment provider.

shiharai ga kanryō shimashitaThe payment is completeA successful result
kessai dekimasen deshitaThe payment could not be completedDo not assume money moved

On a failure, check whether the terminal and your banking record show a charge before retrying. Never tell a cashier your PIN or one-time code.

Financial-information boundary

Acceptance, authorization, payment timing, installments, exchange rates, fees, disputes, and refunds depend on the store, issuer, and payment provider. Use their current written terms and verified support channels.

The Financial Services Agency banking guide provides general multilingual guidance, but this lesson does not recommend a credit option or determine whether a transaction settled.

Verify one completed payment

  • Ask about the specific method and wait for the terminal.
  • State one method clearly.
  • Do not guess at installment or revolving options.
  • Verify amount, protect credentials, and confirm completion.

Apply the payment-method decision to cards and bills

An IC-card top-up trains amount and balance confirmation; a bill trains issuer, acceptance, and receipt checks. Use both to make the general payment-method question lead to visible proof rather than a guessed result.

How do you ask if a store accepts cards in Japanese?

Ask カードは使えますか and wait for the cashier or terminal instruction. A logo alone is not a guarantee for every card, transaction, or payment method, so confirm the specific method before you authorize anything.

What should I do if a payment does not go through?

Check the terminal result and your provider’s record before you retry. Do not share a PIN or one-time code, and use the store, issuer, or provider’s verified support channel when the result is unclear. This lesson does not determine whether a transaction settled.
