At a Japanese ATM, お引き出し means “withdrawal.” Choose it only after verifying the bank and machine, then confirm the account or card, amount, fee, and final result shown on screen. If a message is unclear or the transaction fails, cancel safely and ask verified bank staff for help—never reveal your PIN.

Stop safely when the screen is unclear

Kotoba Bank ATM area
  1. Leo moves toward bright abstract amount blocks without checking their action while Maya notices; his blank card remains in his other hand.

Leo recognizes a number on the screen and presses the brightest button without reading the action label.

    Leo

    This must be the amount.

  2. Maya separates withdraw-deposit-balance actions, grouped amount blocks, fee question, and cancel arrow on a board while Leo listens.

Maya points to the action, amount, fee, and cancel controls as separate decisions.

  3. Leo selects the generic withdrawal icon and matches the chosen abstract amount blocks before confirmation; the separate fee-question row remains visible.

Leo chooses withdrawal and checks the displayed amount before confirming.

    Leo

    お引き出し。金額は一万円です。

Withdrawal. The amount is 10,000 yen.

  4. After a neutral error question appears, Leo uses the cancel control and asks a bank employee while keeping his card and privacy-shield card to himself.

An error appears, so he cancels and asks bank staff without sharing his PIN.

An error appeared. Could you look at the screen?

If the card is retained or the account appears charged without cash, use the contact information displayed on the official machine or your bank’s official channel. Record the machine location, time, and transaction notice. Do not retry repeatedly until you understand whether the first transaction completed.

Security boundary

The Financial Services Agency banking guidance provides multilingual information for foreign residents, and its cash-card security guidance warns users not to disclose a PIN. Use your bank’s current security and dispute process. A legitimate general problem report does not require you to tell staff or police your PIN.

Withdraw cash or stop without exposing credentials

  • Confirm the action, amount, and fee before final approval.
  • Shield and never disclose the PIN.
  • Retrieve card, cash, and receipt.
  • Stop after an unclear failure and use verified bank support.

Compare ATM confirmation with store and IC-card payments

The shared habit is to read the visible amount and completion state before leaving. A store adds a payment-method question; an IC-card top-up adds a chosen charge amount and new balance.
