To pay a bill with a payment slip at a staffed counter, show the complete slip and ask ここで払えますか (“Can I pay this here?”). Verify the issuer, customer or reference number, amount, and due date before paying. Confirm the accepted payment method and keep the stamped or printed receipt.

Verify the bill before the barcode

Kotoba convenience store counter
  1. Leo approaches the checkout with blank phone-message bars and an urgent clock question while Maya pauses him before he presents anything.

Leo receives an unexpected message with a payment number and goes straight to the counter.

    Leo

They said I must pay today.

  2. Leo and Maya compare generic issuer, abstract reference, amount-block, and official-paper patterns on the paper slip instead of trusting the phone alone.

Maya asks him to verify the issuer, account, amount, and official notice first.

    Maya

    請求元を確認しましたか。

Did you verify who issued the bill?

  3. Leo presents the verified fictional paper slip to a clearly drawn cashier, who holds a neutral counter-eligibility question card without accepting it yet.

For a verified utility slip, Leo asks whether that counter accepts it.

    Leo

    この払込票はここで払えますか。

Can I pay this slip here?

  4. For this accepted example, Leo matches abstract amount blocks on slip and register and places exactly one blank receipt into his sleeve while the same cashier points.

He compares the amount and keeps the receipt after payment.

    Leo

    金額を確認しました。受領証を保管します。

I checked the amount. I will keep the receipt.

Verify the slip before presenting payment

Identify the bill
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
kore wa nan no seikyū desu kaWhat charge is this?Ask the verified issuer, not only the cashier
seikyūmoto wa doko desu kaWho issued the bill?Identify the organization
kono bangō wa watashi no mono desu kaIs this my reference number?Compare with the account record
shiharai kigen wa itsu desu kaWhen is the payment deadline?Read the due date

An unexpected email or caller-provided payment number is not proof of a debt. Verify through a known official contact. The National Consumer Affairs Center’s current suspicious-billing guidance says not to pay or contact the sender before checking an unfamiliar charge.

shiharai wa kanryō shimashita kaIs the payment complete?Confirm the register result

Check that the receipt identifies the correct issuer, amount, and date. Do not throw away the original stub until the issuer’s instructions and account status show it is safe to do so.

Handle a mismatch or suspected scam

If the register amount differs, say 金額が違います。支払いを止めてください (“The amount is different. Please stop the payment”). The cashier may be unable to explain the underlying charge; contact the issuer through a trusted number. If you already paid a suspicious bill, keep the receipt and seek prompt consumer or police advice.

If the register stops before printing proof, ask 支払いは処理されましたか (“Was the payment processed?”) before trying again. The cashier can check the register result; the issuer confirms whether the account was credited. Record both answers when they differ.

Verify an unfamiliar bill before paying

Use the issuer’s official contact to verify unfamiliar bills. For consumer trouble, the Consumer Affairs Agency’s Consumer Hotline 188 routes callers to a local consultation service. For a non-emergency police consultation, the National Police Agency lists #9110; access hours and language support vary. This lesson cannot determine whether a charge is legally owed.

Pay the correct bill and keep the receipt

  • Verify issuer, reference, amount, and due date.
  • Ask whether the original slip is accepted.
  • Stop on a mismatch and use an official contact.
  • Keep the payment receipt.

Carry payment verification into banking and transit

A bill payment ends with a receipt; a bank or IC-card transaction ends with a visible account or balance state. In all three, verify the issuer, amount, and completion before treating the task as finished.
