When browser storage is available, these choices are saved here and applied to other lessons. Audio uses the browser or device speech engine and prefers an available Japanese voice.

At a Japanese convenience-store checkout, you do not need to decode every polite word. Combine three clues: the stage of the checkout, the object the cashier indicates, and one content word such as 袋ふくろ (bag), 温めあたため (heating), or ポイントカード (points card). Then give one short response that matches that choice. If the choice is still unclear, say もう一度お願いしますもう いちど おねがいします instead of guessing.

This lesson owns recognition and short responses during the convenience-store checkout. The broader path from finding an item to deciding whether to buy it belongs to Japanese shopping phrases. Payment acceptance, one-time versus installment questions, and transaction completion belong to Japanese payment-method phrases. Longer listening repair belongs to asking someone to speak slowly.

The Play controls in this lesson rely on your browser or device voice; that output is not a human-reviewed recording. Available voices and pronunciation differ by system. Use the written readings as your reference, and remember that the changed Japanese still awaits qualified review.

Recognize the choice before answering

Kotoba Street convenience-store register
  1. At one convenience-store register, an unnamed cashier holds a plain bag beside Leo and one sealed bento.

An unnamed cashier holds up one plain bag beside Leo's sealed bento and asks the first checkout question.

    Cashier

    レジ袋はご利用ですか。レジぶくろは ごりようですか

Would you like a shopping bag?

  2. At the same register, Leo looks from the cashier's raised bag to the sealed bento and recognizes which choice is being asked.

Leo misses some polite words, but he looks at the raised bag, catches 袋, and identifies the current choice himself.

    Leo

    袋のことだ。ふくろの ことだ

    This is about the bag.

  3. Leo gives a gentle decline gesture while the cashier lowers the plain bag at the same register.

Leo declines clearly by naming the bag, and the cashier lowers it before continuing the checkout.

    Leo

    袋は要りません。ふくろは いりません

I do not need a bag.

  4. Leo points to the sealed bento while the cashier waits beside an inactive microwave and the bag remains out of view.

The cashier shifts attention from the bag to the sealed bento. Leo catches 温め, points to that specific item, and gives a different short answer.

    Leo

    はい、温めてください。はい、あたためて ください

    Yes, please heat it.

Dialogue remains selectable HTML. The illustrations contain no dependable generated text.

Leo does not recover the missing words by pretending he heard them. The bag, the checkout stage, and 袋ふくろ identify the first choice; his answer names that object. When the cashier shifts to the bento and he hears 温めあたため, he changes his response. This method has limits: he can classify the current question and answer it, but he still needs to ask for repetition whenever those clues do not agree.

Read three clues together

Use the clues as a set, not as separate proof:

  1. Stage: Has the cashier just scanned the item, reached for a bag, indicated food, or moved to payment?
  2. Object: What is the cashier holding or pointing to?
  3. Content word: Can you catch 袋ふくろ, 温めあたため, 箸はし, ポイントカード, 支払いしはらい, or レシート?

The object alone can be ambiguous, and a word heard out of context can be misleading. If you cannot identify one concrete choice, use すみません、もう一度お願いしますすみません、もう いちど おねがいします. Do not answer はい automatically; it may accept a bag or service you meant to decline.

Answer the bag question

Bag questions and short responses
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
reji-bukuro wa goriyō desu kaWould you like a shopping bag?Recognize 袋 and the visible bag
fukuro wa irimasu kaDo you need a bag?A direct bag question
fukuro o onegai shimasuA bag, pleaseAccept and name the object
fukuro wa irimasenI do not need a bagDecline clearly
ichimai onegai shimasuOne, pleaseRequest one bag when the object is clear

お願いしますおねがいします can work when the object is unmistakable, but naming 袋ふくろ makes the response clearer. Bag availability, price, and size vary, so follow the current cashier or register display rather than treating the practice exchange as a store policy.

Answer the heating question

Heating questions and short responses
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
kochira, atatamemasu kaShall I heat this?Notice the indicated food and 温め
obentō, atatamemasu kaShall I heat the bento?A question naming the food
hai, atatamete kudasaiYes, please heat itAccept heating
sono mama de daijōbu desuIt is fine as it isDecline heating
kore dake atatamete kudasaiPlease heat only thisLimit the request to one indicated item

Catch 温めあたため and confirm which item is being indicated before answering. Whether an item can be heated, how it should be handled, and what equipment is available depend on the product and store. Follow the current package, cashier, and terminal instructions.

Separate cutlery from the points card

Cutlery and points-card choices
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
ohashi wa otsuke shimasu kaShall I include chopsticks?Listen for 箸
supūn wa otsuke shimasu kaShall I include a spoon?Listen for スプーン
hashi o onegai shimasuChopsticks, pleaseRequest chopsticks
supūn wa irimasenI do not need a spoonDecline a spoon
pointo kādo wa omochi desu kaDo you have a points card?Recognize the points-card question
pointo kādo wa arimasenI do not have a points cardAnswer without presenting one

お付けしますかおつけしますか asks whether something should be included. The noun before it tells you what. A points card is a different question, so do not reuse a cutlery answer just because both arrive near the end of checkout.

State payment and finish the exchange

Payment and receipt responses
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
oshiharai hōhō wa nan ni nasaimasu kaHow would you like to pay?Recognize a payment-method choice

reshīto wa irimasenI do not need the receiptDecline the receipt
ryōshūsho o onegai shimasuA formal receipt, pleaseRequest expense documentation

Here で marks the method: 現金でげんきんで or カードで. This lesson only gives the short response after a method choice appears. Use the payment-method lesson to ask what is accepted, distinguish transaction questions, and verify completion. Register layouts and available methods vary; wait for the current cashier or terminal prompt before tapping, inserting, or handing over payment.

Answer the checkout questions in sequence

  • Use stage + object + content word to identify one concrete choice.
  • Name the object when a bare yes or no could be ambiguous.
  • Treat bag, heating, cutlery, points, payment, and receipt as separate questions.
  • Ask もう一度お願いしますもう いちど おねがいします when the clues do not agree.
  • Follow the current cashier, product, and terminal rather than treating examples as store policy.

Leo’s small success is not perfect listening. He recognizes what the cashier is asking now, gives one matching response, and checks the new object before answering again. Next, learn how to check in at a Japanese hotel and make one clear request.

Try the real-world task

Recognize each checkout choice, give one matching short response, and repair the exchange when necessary.

Ready means:

  • I can combine the checkout stage, a visible object, and a key word to identify the current question.
  • I can answer bag, heating, cutlery, points-card, payment, and receipt choices briefly.
  • I can ask for repetition instead of guessing when the choice is unclear.
