At a Japanese station, start with the destination and ask for the current platform: 新宿へ行く電車は何番線ですかしんじゅくへ いく でんしゃは なんばんせんですか. If staff says Platform 3 and a transfer at Nakano, repeat both: 三番線から乗って、中野で乗り換えるんですねさんばんせんから のって、なかので のりかえるんですね. Follow the live Platform 3 sign only after staff confirms. A moving crowd, a saved screenshot, or a companion’s different route is not evidence that your train leaves from the same place.

This lesson owns station-level tickets, gates, platforms, transfers, and exits. Street directions belong to Article 17. Article 19 owns whether a specific train goes there, stops there, or should be boarded. Article 36 owns delays, cancellations, and alternative routes. Article 37 owns IC card charging, balance, and error diagnosis.

Follow the current route, not the old plan

Kotoba Station concourse during a departure change
  1. At Kotoba Station, Leo compares an old Platform 2 screenshot with a changed live board while a crowd moves and his appointment time adds pressure.

Leo's saved screenshot says Platform 2, but the live departure board has changed and the crowd is moving. His appointment is approaching, and he stops before treating either the screenshot or the crowd as his route.

    Leo

    二番線じゃないの?にばんせんじゃ ないの

    Wasn't it Platform 2?

  2. Maya indicates that her service goes another way as Leo lowers his old screenshot and turns toward the staffed help point before they separate.

Maya's different service visibly points toward another route. Leo lowers the saved screenshot, chooses to check with station staff himself, and separates from Maya instead of following her.

    Leo

    駅員さんに確認してくる。ここで分かれよう。えきいんさんに かくにんしてくる。ここで わかれよう

I'll check with the station staff. Let's split up here.

  3. The same station employee answers Leo at the help point and indicates Platform 3 plus a transfer at Nakano on the current live information.

After Leo asks 新宿へ行く電車は何番線ですか, the same station employee gives the current platform and transfer point without choosing a specific train for him.

    Station staff

    三番線です。中野で乗り換えてください。さんばんせんです。なかので のりかえてください。

Platform 3. Please transfer at Nakano.

  4. The employee nods as Leo repeats Platform 3 and the Nakano transfer, then Leo follows the live sign alone while Maya heads elsewhere and no train is boarded.

Leo repeats both actions. The employee nods, Maya heads toward her different service and leaves the causal frame, and Leo follows the live Platform 3 sign alone; he has not boarded or confirmed a specific train yet.

    Leo

    三番線から乗って、中野で乗り換えるんですね。さんばんせんから のって、なかので のりかえるんですね

I board from Platform 3 and transfer at Nakano, right?

Dialogue remains selectable HTML. The illustrations contain no dependable generated text.

Leo begins with three pressures that do not answer his question: an old screenshot, a moving crowd, and an approaching appointment. Maya’s service visibly diverges from his, so following her would only exchange one assumption for another. Leo lowers the screenshot and chooses the staffed help point.

The employee supplies two current station facts: Platform 3 and a transfer at Nakano. Leo repeats both, receives a nod, and follows the live platform sign himself. Maya leaves for her own service. The observable result is Leo’s solo movement toward the current route, not boarding or arrival.

The specific train remains unresolved. Platform and transfer confirmation have reduced the next decision, but they have not answered whether an arriving train goes to Shinjuku or whether Leo should board it. That is the next lesson’s task.

Buy or find a ticket

Ask where to buy a 切符きっぷ, where the machine is, or where to find the 改札かいさつ. Name the destination when you need a fare. Do not assume that every card, area, or machine uses the same process.

Tickets and gates
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
kippu uriba wa doko desu kaWhere is the ticket counter?Find a ticket sales area
kenbaiki wa doko desu kaWhere is the ticket machine?Find a machine
Shinjuku made ikura desu kaHow much is it to Shinjuku?Ask the fare
aishī kādo wa tsukaemasu kaCan I use an IC card?Confirm card acceptance
kaisatsu wa doko desu kaWhere are the ticket gates?Find the gates

IC acceptance and machine steps can vary by operator, area, card, and machine. For Suica specifically, JR East’s current area guidance says a conventional-line trip must stay within one Suica area and cannot cross between separate areas; buy a ticket in advance for an inter-area trip.

If an IC card tap fails, do not keep tapping it. If a paper ticket is returned or rejected, do not keep reinserting it. Read or point to the gate display, keep the same card or ticket, and show it to station staff. Charging, balance, and error diagnosis remain a separate task.

Ask for the platform

In station language, ホーム means the platform area where you wait. 番線ばんせん is the numbered track or platform designation used to locate a departure. Ask 新宿へ行く電車は何番線ですかしんじゅくへ いく でんしゃは なんばんせんですか when Shinjuku is your destination.

The shorter 新宿行きしんじゅくゆき means a Shinjuku-bound service. Use it only when the displayed destination or terminus is Shinjuku. If the train continues beyond Shinjuku, the general 新宿へ行く電車しんじゅくへ いく でんしゃ form avoids naming the wrong terminus.

Platform questions
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
Shinjuku e iku densha wa nanban-sen desu kaWhich platform is the train going to Shinjuku on?Ask by your destination
Shinjuku-yuki wa nanban-sen desu kaWhich platform is the Shinjuku-bound service on?Use only when Shinjuku is the displayed destination or terminus
kono hōmu de atte imasu kaIs this the correct platform area?Confirm where you are waiting
sanban-sen wa doko desu kaWhere is Platform 3?Find a numbered departure point

Check the live line name, displayed destination, service type, platform number, and departure time together. A platform answer gets you to the current waiting area; it does not confirm that every train there makes the same stops or that one arriving train is yours.

Local, rapid, and express

Service labels describe stopping patterns, not quality. The same English word can also hide operator-specific distinctions, so read the live Japanese label and current ticket conditions rather than assuming one universal pattern.

Common service words
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
kakueki teishalocal / stops at every stationStops at every station on its route; still check the displayed destination
kaisokurapidSkips some stations according to the current service pattern
kyūkōexpressCheck the line's current stopping pattern
tokkyūlimited expressCheck the current service's additional-ticket and seat conditions
tsūkapasses without stoppingRecognize that the service skips a station

For JR East services, its current ticket overview and purchasing guide explains the basic fare and limited-express ticket used for Shinkansen and limited-express journeys. Purchase format, included components, and seat conditions can vary by service and product, including current e-ticket products. Other operators and services use their own ticket products and conditions, so check the current operator and service before treating 特急とっきゅう as a complete ticket instruction.

A service label still does not decide whether a specific arriving train goes to your destination, stops there, or should be boarded. Keep that train-level question separate from this station-navigation step.

Ask about a transfer

Use どこで乗り換えますかどこで のりかえますか to ask where to change trains. The particle で marks the station where the transfer happens; に marks the line you change to.

Transfer language
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
doko de norikaemasu kaWhere do I transfer?Ask for the transfer station
nansen ni norikaereba ii desu kaWhich line should I transfer to?Ask for the next line
Nakano de Chūō-sen ni norikaeru n desu neI transfer to the Chuo Line at Nakano, correct?Repeat the transfer station and line
sanban-sen kara notte, Nakano de norikaeru n desu neI board from Platform 3 and transfer at Nakano, correct?Repeat the current platform and transfer together

Repeat the platform and transfer station first. If the reply includes the next line, repeat that too. The confirmation gives you one current station sequence; it is not a guarantee that you have identified or boarded the correct train.

Find the correct exit

After the train journey, use the named or numbered 出口でぐち to return from station navigation to the street. An exit name is a station-level location; it does not replace the walking directions outside.

Exit questions
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse
higashiguchi wa doko desu kaWhere is the east exit?Find a named exit
ē san deguchi wa doko desu kaWhere is Exit A3?Find a numbered exit
kono deguchi de atte imasu kaIs this the correct exit?Confirm before leaving the gate area
erebētā wa doko desu kaWhere is the elevator?Find the elevator

Verify the live exit sign after arrival. If you need a step-free route, ask staff before committing to stairs; the nearest exit is not necessarily the one that fits your access needs.

Reach the correct platform and exit

  • Start with the destination and ask for the current platform.
  • Treat ホーム as the platform area and 番線ばんせん as its numbered track or platform designation.
  • Repeat the platform, transfer station, and next line that staff gives you.
  • Follow the live sign after confirmation; a crowd, saved plan, or companion’s route is not the answer.
  • Check a specific train separately before boarding, especially when services share a platform.
  • Keep ticket conditions tied to the current operator and service, and take a rejected card or ticket to staff instead of repeating the failed gate action.

Leo’s old screenshot did not become a route because it once looked correct. His usable result came from asking one current question, repeating the actionable reply, and walking toward the live sign himself. Platform 3 is now his next station step; the specific train is still his next question.

How do you ask for a train platform in Japanese?

Ask 新宿へ行く電車は何番線ですか when Shinjuku is your destination. Repeat the current platform and transfer point, then follow the live sign after staff confirms them. Use 新宿行き only when the displayed destination or terminus is Shinjuku.

How do you ask where to transfer in Japanese?

Ask どこで乗り換えますか, then repeat the transfer station and next line. Treat the answer as the current station step, not permission to board a specific train; check that train separately before boarding.

Street Check · 1–3 minutes

Try the real-world task

Confirm a changed station route with staff, repeat the current platform and transfer, and move toward the live sign.

Ready means:

  • I can ask which platform currently serves my destination.
  • I can ask for and repeat the transfer station and next line.
  • I can repeat the current platform and transfer, then follow the live sign myself.
