Order, wait, identify, collect

Kotoba Café takeout counter
  1. Maya points to a coral plated-dish card and gestures vaguely toward a folded takeout bag while the café employee waits.

Maya points at a dine-in menu photo and says only that she wants it to go.

    Maya

    これ、外で。

    This, to go.

  2. The employee clearly separates the coral dine-in dish card from the mint sandwich-and-bag takeout card for Maya.

The staff member explains that this item is dine-in only and shows the takeout menu.

    Staff

    こちらは持ち帰りできません。

This item is not available for takeout.

  3. Maya provides one blank pickup-name card as exactly two identical sandwich boxes wait together on the takeout counter.

Maya chooses an eligible item and gives quantity and name.

    Maya

    サンドイッチを二つ、持ち帰りで。マヤです。

Two sandwiches to go. The name is Maya.

  4. The employee matches the pickup card while Maya checks exactly two sandwich boxes inside the open bag and keeps the receipt.

She listens for her number, checks two items, and leaves with the receipt.

    Maya

    二つ入っています。

    There are two inside.

For allergies or strict dietary restrictions, packaging and a verbal “takeout” confirmation do not verify ingredients or cross-contact. Complete the separate safety conversation.

Confirm packaging and safe handoff

Ask 温かいものと冷たいものは別ですか (“Are hot and cold items separate?”) when packaging matters, and 袋は必要です or 袋は要りません before payment. If staff give reheating or storage instructions, repeat the time and method; do not infer food-safety limits from a language example.

For advance orders, distinguish the order time from pickup time: 六時に注文して、七時に受け取ります. At collection, use the same name, number, and channel as the order. If the bag seal or label does not match, pause before opening it so staff can identify the order accurately.

The task is complete when the correct items, quantities, accepted modifications, receipt, and pickup identity match, not merely when you have a bag.

If the restaurant substitutes an item, ask for the new item name and price before accepting it. A similar package is not proof that the contents or dietary details are equivalent.

Collect the right takeout order safely

  • Confirm the specific item is available to go.
  • Give item and quantity clearly.
  • Understand wait and pickup identity.
  • Check order and receipt before leaving.

Add ingredient safety or a full table-service sequence

If an ingredient can affect safety, confirm the allergy before placing or collecting the order. If you will eat in, move to the restaurant-order sequence for staff attention, quantity, confirmation, and payment.

How do you ask for takeout in Japanese?

Point to the item and ask 持ち帰りできますか (mochikaeri dekimasu ka). If the answer is これは店内だけです, that item is dine-in only; choose another item or ask 持ち帰りのメニューはどれですか to find what is eligible. The phrase confirms availability, not ingredients, so keep the allergy conversation separate.

How do you order two of something in Japanese?

Point and say これを二つお願いします (kore o futatsu onegai shimasu). When the list is finished, close it with 注文はこれで全部です, then confirm the total with 全部でいくらですか. Ask 何分かかりますか for the wait and keep the number or name used for collection.

Street Check · 1–3 minutes
