To order food in Japanese, name or point to the item, add a quantity, and finish with お願いします. With a picture menu, これを一つお願いします means “One of these, please.” Then stop and listen: the staff repeat-back tells you which item and number reached the order pad.
If the repeat-back is correct but a drink is missing, add あと、お水もお願いします. If one detail is wrong, correct only that detail before you agree. After the meal, ask for the check with お会計をお願いします.
Restaurants do not all use the same flow. Some use table or counter service; others use a ticket machine, tablet, QR menu, or app. Use the restaurant’s visible system, and use this spoken exchange when staff take or confirm the order.
This page’s Play controls use your browser or device voice, not a human-reviewed recording. Voice availability and pronunciation vary. Use the written repeat-back to learn the exchange, then check your listening and pronunciation with reliable Japanese audio or a real conversation.

The repeat-back completes the order

Leo chooses one curry and water from the picture menu before placing his order.
LeoOne curry, and I also want water.

Leo points to the curry picture and places one clear order while Haru opens his order pad.
Leoこれを一つお願いします。
One of these, please.

Haru repeats the curry and quantity he recorded, and Leo listens before answering.
Haruカレーがお一つですね。
One curry, right?

Leo confirms the curry and adds water. Haru completes the order ticket, clips it to the service rail, and reaches for a water carafe.
Leoはい。あと、お水もお願いします。
Yes. Water too, please.
Dialogue remains selectable HTML. The illustrations contain no dependable generated text.
Leo’s first request is clear but incomplete: it places one curry on Haru’s order pad. The repeat-back lets Leo hear exactly what was recorded. He confirms the curry and adds the missing water instead of restarting the whole order. The completed ticket then moves from Haru’s pad to the service rail, and Haru reaches for the water; the order now moves into service.
Begin when the ordering stage starts
In table service, a clear すみません can get a staff member’s attention when the person is near enough to hear. You may not need it if staff have already come to the table or the restaurant uses a call button. At a counter, ticket machine, or tablet, begin with the system already in front of you.
This lesson starts at the order itself. Continue to the full Japanese restaurant phrases lesson for arrival, seating, menu-stage questions, and payment. If an ingredient or cross-contact can affect your health, use the dedicated food allergy Japanese phrases lesson rather than relying on a general menu question.
Build one clear item request
Use a menu name or これ, add を, and finish with お願いします. Add the quantity before the final request when it matters.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
これをお願いします。 | kore o onegaishimasu | This, please. | Point to one menu item |
カレーをお願いします。 | karē o onegaishimasu | Curry, please. | Use the item name |
これを一つお願いします。 | kore o hitotsu onegaishimasu | One of these, please. | Make the quantity explicit |
In this pattern, を marks what you are requesting. You may also hear shorter restaurant orders without を, such as an item name followed by お願いします. Keep one complete pattern stable while you are learning.
Point without losing the sentence
Pointing is useful when a menu name is difficult. Still say これをお願いします rather than relying on a silent gesture. The spoken phrase confirms that you are ordering, not merely asking about the picture.
If you need to review why the pointing word changes with distance, return to Kore, Sore, and Are.
Add a quantity and drink
The general counters 一つ・二つ・三つ work as a beginner fallback for many menu items. Some foods and drinks use more specific counters, so listen to the staff repeat-back when they rephrase your order.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
一つ | hitotsu | one | One item |
二つ | futatsu | two | Two items |
三つ | mittsu | three | Three items |
Use と to join items in one request, or pause and add a second short request after the repeat-back.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
カレーを一つと、サラダを一つお願いします。 | karē o hitotsu to, sarada o hitotsu onegaishimasu | One curry and one salad, please. | Order both together |
あと、お水もお願いします。 | ato, omizu mo onegaishimasu | Water too, please. | Add a drink after the first repeat-back |
Water or tea may already be provided, but that varies. Look at the table and the service system before asking; in the lesson scene, no water is present until Leo adds it.
Stop and listen to the repeat-back
Your first request may not finish the exchange. Staff may repeat what they recorded, and this is your chance to check the item and quantity before service moves forward.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
カレーがお一つですね。 | karē ga ohitotsu desu ne | One curry, right? | Staff confirm the recorded item and quantity |
以上でよろしいですか。 | ijō de yoroshii desu ka | Will that be all? | Staff ask whether the order is complete |
はい、お願いします。 | hai, onegaishimasu | Yes, please. | Confirm when the repeat-back is correct |
あと、お水もお願いします。 | ato, omizu mo onegaishimasu | Water too, please. | Add the one missing drink |
Listen for the content words first: the menu item and the number. You do not need to understand every polite ending before deciding whether the recorded order matches yours.
Correct only the wrong detail
If staff repeat the wrong quantity, repeat the item with the correct number without restarting the entire order.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
カレーがお二つですね。 | karē ga ofutatsu desu ne | Two curries, right? | The repeated quantity is wrong |
すみません、カレーは一つです。 | sumimasen, karē wa hitotsu desu | Sorry, just one curry. | Correct only the quantity |
Point to the same menu item while you correct the number. The short repair keeps both people on the same order and makes the changed detail easy to hear.
Ask for the check after the meal
The check belongs to a later stage than the order. After the meal, use お会計をお願いします when staff handle the bill.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
お会計をお願いします。 | okaikei o onegaishimasu | The check, please. | Ask for the bill after the meal |
You may pay at the table, take a bill to the register, or use a machine or tablet. Follow the restaurant’s signs and staff directions. Continue to the full restaurant phrases lesson for the wider arrival-to-payment sequence and common staff questions.
Common ordering mistakes
Naming food without marking it as an order
Saying only “curry” may be understood, but をお願いします makes it a clear request.
Adding every detail before you listen
Order the base item, pause for the repeat-back, then add one missing drink or correct one detail. A shorter exchange gives both people a clear place to repair the order.
Ignoring the staff’s confirmation
The repeated order is your chance to catch quantity or item errors. Listen for item names and numbers even when the surrounding sentence is fast.
Assuming every restaurant uses table service
A phrase cannot override the restaurant system. Look for a vending machine, QR code, tablet, counter line, or table call button first.
Practice one order and one repair
Complete one order by listening for the repeat-back
- Get attention with すみません only when the service system calls for it.
- Order with item or これ + を + quantity + お願いします.
- Stop and listen for the repeated item and number.
- Confirm the recorded order, add one missing detail, or correct only the wrong detail.
- Use お会計をお願いします after the meal, not during the order.
- Follow the restaurant’s actual ordering and payment system.
Leo’s order becomes complete when he listens to Haru’s repeat-back and adds the missing water. Before your next meal out, rehearse one item, one number, and お願いします—then rehearse the pause. If the repeat-back is wrong, repair one detail and listen again.
