After you know the waste category, ask 何曜日ですか (“What day of the week is it?”), then confirm the deadline and collection point. Read the schedule for your address: nearby streets, apartment buildings, and holiday periods may use different times or locations.

Kotoba apartment notice board
  1. Leo carries one tied bag toward the neighboring area while showing a loose schedule card with a different building silhouette and highlighted weekday tab; Maya notices.

Leo sees Thursday on a neighboring block's sign and carries his bag there.

    Leo

    木曜日ですね。

    Thursday, right?

  2. Maya compares the neighboring-block schedule with Leo's apartment card, which has a different weekday tab, analog clock, and rear-building pin.

Maya points out that Leo's building has its own collection point and morning deadline.

    Maya

    住所と場所が違います。

The address and place are different.

  3. At his own notice board, Leo asks the manager about one mint category; the manager shows its blank weekday row, eight-o'clock clock, and rear-location map.

Leo asks the manager about one category.

    Leo

    資源ごみは何曜日ですか。

    What day is recyclable waste?

  4. Leo repeats the category, selected weekday tab, analog deadline, and rear-building collection point to Maya while the tied bag remains in his hand.

He repeats all four details before using the schedule.

    Leo

    火曜日の朝八時まで、ここですね。

Here by 8 Tuesday morning, right?

Read a calendar entry without shifting the day

Japanese schedules may say 火曜日の朝 (“Tuesday morning”), 第一・第三水曜日 (“the first and third Wednesdays”), or 前日の夜には出さないでください (“Do not put it out the night before”). Identify the weekday, week number, deadline, and prohibition separately. The third Wednesday is not always the third collection occurrence in a month.

If the notice says 朝八時まで, it sets a latest time; it does not promise collection at exactly eight. If a bag remains after collection, do not automatically move it to another point. Check for a rejection sticker, incorrect category, schedule exception, or building instruction.

Your completion check is one sentence containing all actionable details: 資源ごみは第二・第四火曜日の朝八時までに、建物の裏です. Compare that sentence with the current written schedule before putting the item out.

When asking a neighbor, show the official calendar and point to your category. この表では、次はいつですか (“According to this table, when is the next one?”) reduces ambiguity. Confirm the actual date as well as the weekday when holidays or month boundaries are near.

If you cannot read the calendar, ask the other person to circle the next date and collection point. Then photograph the whole notice with its title and year, not only the circled square, so you retain the category and version context.

Trust the current address-specific collection calendar

Use the current municipal calendar for your address and any building-specific notice. A remembered schedule from a neighbor, former address, or previous year is not sufficient evidence. Boundary rechecked August 11, 2026; ask municipal or building staff about an unresolved language or local-process question.

Put the correct collection on your calendar

  • Name the category before asking the day.
  • Distinguish every week from numbered or irregular weeks.
  • Confirm deadline and exact collection point.
  • Check holiday and updated-notice exceptions.

Confirm the category before relying on the date

A collection date is useful only after the item is in the correct local category. Review sorting first when the material or preparation is uncertain, and use neighbor language only for a respectful question—not as a substitute for the official calendar.

Try the real-world task

Put out one category at the correct local time and place.

Ready means:

  • I can ask the collection day.
  • I can understand a weekday and time.
  • I can confirm the collection point.
