To reserve a restaurant table, say 予約をお願いします, then give the date, time, party size, and booking name. Listen for available, unavailable, or an alternative time, and repeat the final details. A request is not a reservation until the restaurant confirms it.

A request becomes a booking after confirmation

Leo says only the desired time and prepares to hang up.
Leo土曜日の七時です。
Saturday at seven.

The staff member still needs the number of guests and name, and explains that seven is unavailable.
Staff七時は満席です。七時半はいかがですか。
Seven is full. How about 7:30?

Leo accepts the alternative and gives party size and name.
Leo七時半に二人、レオです。
Two people at 7:30, under Leo.

He repeats the full confirmed booking before ending the call.
Leo土曜日の七時半、二人、レオの名前で予約ですね。
Saturday at 7:30, two people, under Leo, right?

Give date, time, and party size
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
土曜日の七時に予約をお願いします | doyōbi no shichiji ni yoyaku o onegai shimasu | A reservation for Saturday at seven, please | Give day and time |
二人です | futari desu | Two people | State party size |
七月十八日です | shichigatsu jūhachinichi desu | July 18 | Use a date to avoid weekday ambiguity |
名前はレオです | namae wa Reo desu | The name is Leo | Give the booking name |
Use the calendar date as well as the weekday when booking far ahead or around midnight. Confirm morning or evening if the time could be ambiguous.
Understand availability and alternatives
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
空いています | aite imasu | It is available | Continue giving details |
満席です | manseki desu | We are fully booked | Choose another time or stop |
七時半はいかがですか | shichiji-han wa ikaga desu ka | How about 7:30? | An alternative offer |
その時間でお願いします | sono jikan de onegai shimasu | That time, please | Accept the offered time |
Add one essential request
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
子どもが一人います | kodomo ga hitori imasu | There is one child | Include in party details |
車いすを使います | kuruma isu o tsukaimasu | One guest uses a wheelchair | Ask about access |
食物アレルギーがあります | shokumotsu arerugī ga arimasu | There is a food allergy | Begin a separate detailed safety check |
席の指定はできますか | seki no shitei wa dekimasu ka | Can I request a particular seat? | Ask; do not assume a guarantee |
An allergy note in a reservation is not a completed ingredient or cross-contact check. Follow the food-allergy lesson with the restaurant.
Identify an existing reservation before changing it
When changing or cancelling, begin with the current booking: 七月十八日、レオの名前で予約しています. Then state one change at a time. A message saying 変更を受け付けました means the change request was received; repeat the new date, time, party size, and any policy or charge before assuming it replaced the old booking.
If the restaurant cannot find the reservation, offer the confirmation number, booking channel, phone number used, and exact name spelling. Do not create a second booking until you know whether the first exists. Save the confirmation screen or note the person and time of the call.
Confirm, change, or cancel
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
予約内容を確認します | yoyaku naiyō o kakunin shimasu | I will confirm the reservation details | Repeat every field |
予約を変更したいです | yoyaku o henkō shitai desu | I would like to change the reservation | Give existing name and date |
予約をキャンセルしたいです | yoyaku o kyanseru shitai desu | I would like to cancel the reservation | Ask about current policy |
確認番号はありますか | kakunin bangō wa arimasu ka | Is there a confirmation number? | Keep evidence when provided |
Finish with a reservation you can repeat back
- Give date, time, party size, and name.
- Treat an alternative as a new choice to confirm.
- Handle safety and access needs explicitly.
- Repeat the complete booking before ending.
Carry the confirmed booking into the meal
The reservation secures date, time, party size, and any accepted request. The restaurant lesson handles arrival through payment; the takeout lesson gives a shorter path when the meal will be collected instead.
