To discuss one school concern, say 少し相談したいです (“I would like to discuss something briefly”), identify the child and one topic, and ask for the teacher’s observations. Separate what happened at home from what the school observed, then agree on one follow-up action and date.

One concern, two observations

Kotoba School meeting room
  1. Nora presents a vague unhappy-cloud-over-school conclusion while the teacher listens without accepting it as fact.

Nora opens with a broad claim that Luca is unhappy at school.

    Nora

    学校が嫌いみたいです。

    He seems to hate school.

  2. The teacher separates home-morning context from school-classroom context while Nora listens in the private meeting room.

The teacher asks what Nora observed and offers a separate classroom observation.

    Teacher

    家ではどんな様子ですか。

What is he like at home?

  3. Nora holds two abstract sunrise-and-teardrop observation cards and asks about the matching school context; no child portrait appears.

Nora gives a specific time and behavior and asks about the same situation at school.

    Nora

    今週、朝に泣くことが二回ありました。学校ではどうですか。

This week he cried twice in the morning. How is he at school?

  4. Nora and the teacher place separate plum home notes and blue school notes beside an unnumbered follow-up strip for a later check.

They agree to record mornings for one week and speak again Friday.

    Nora

    一週間記録して、金曜日に確認します。

We will keep notes for a week and check Friday.

Do not discuss another child by name or seek private information the teacher cannot share. For safety, bullying, discrimination, disability support, medical needs, or legal rights, use the school’s formal safeguarding and consultation paths and qualified support.

Record points of agreement and disagreement

After the meeting, write separate notes for facts both sides observed, interpretations that remain uncertain, and the action each person accepted. Send a concise summary through the school-approved channel when appropriate: 家庭では朝の様子を記録し、先生は登校後の様子を確認します.

If you disagree with an interpretation, say その点は少し違う理解です and return to specific examples. Respectful disagreement is clearer than saying 分かりました when you do not agree.

At follow-up, compare the agreed observation period rather than introducing an unrelated new concern. If the problem is urgent, worsening, or safety-related, do not wait for the scheduled meeting.

School-support boundary

MEXT’s multilingual school guidebook and Casta-net school-support resources can help families understand common school language. They do not diagnose a child or resolve an individual safeguarding, bullying, discrimination, disability, medical, or legal issue. Use the school’s and board of education’s current formal routes and qualified support for the actual case. Source boundary last checked: July 12, 2026.

Leave the teacher conversation with a follow-up

  • Choose a private setting and one topic.
  • Separate home and school observations.
  • Avoid unsupported diagnosis and other children’s private details.
  • Set one follow-up action and date.

Carry the follow-up into school and community routines

A school absence call reports one event; a community event adds registration, access, and a small role. Practice both to keep teacher follow-up separate from routine scheduling and participation.

Try the real-world task

Complete one focused parent-teacher exchange.

Ready means:

  • I can identify the child and topic.
  • I can ask one bounded question.
  • I can repeat the agreed follow-up action.
