About this lesson and its scene

Confirm a delivery time, ask for a short wait, identify the recipient, and close a simple doorstep parcel exchange in Japanese.

Inside her closed apartment door, Maya compares a text-free expected-delivery card with the intercom image of a generic driver holding one parcel before opening.

When a delivery arrives, listen for 宅配便です (“It is a parcel delivery”), verify the carrier or parcel through the intercom, and say 少し待ってください if you need a short moment to reach the door. Confirm the recipient name and follow the driver’s actual instruction for a signature, stamp, code, or no-contact handoff.

Key phrase 少し待ってください Please wait a moment. Open the card above ↑

Verify before opening the door

Maya's apartment intercom and doorway
  1. With the apartment door closed, Maya sees the same generic driver holding one sealed parcel on the intercom screen.

The intercom rings and the visitor identifies the purpose.

    Driver

    宅配便です。

    Parcel delivery.

  2. Maya checks color-swatch, parcel, and recipient pictograms against the driver's generic label silhouette while the door remains closed.

Maya checks the addressee against her expected-delivery record.

    Maya

    どなた宛てですか。

    Who is it addressed to?

  3. Maya gives a short-wait hand beside the locked door and analog-clock pictogram while the driver waits on the intercom with the parcel.

After verifying the expected delivery, Maya asks for a brief wait while she reaches the door.

    Maya

    少し待ってください。

    Please wait a moment.

  4. At the partly opened, chain-controlled doorway, Maya points to the blank recipient-and-signature field while the driver still holds the parcel.

At the controlled doorway, Maya confirms the recipient field and asks where to sign.

    Maya

    ここにサインしますか。

    Do I sign here?

Identify the visitor and parcel

dochira no haisō gaisha desu kaWhich delivery company is it?Ask for the carrier
donata-ate desu kaWho is it addressed to?Ask for the addressee
namae o kakunin shite kudasaiPlease confirm the nameAsk for the recipient name without sharing extra information

You do not need to open the door merely because someone says 宅配便. Compare the carrier, expected order, tracking notice, and recipient name. Follow your building’s security procedure.

Ask for a short wait or explain a problem

Before the handoff
JapaneseRomajiMeaningUse

kono heya dewa arimasenIt is not this apartmentThe room number does not match
sono namae no hito wa imasenNo one by that name is hereDo not accept an unknown recipient's parcel

If the parcel is not expected or the name and address do not match, do not guess. Ask the driver to recheck the label or contact the carrier through an official channel.

Confirm the recipient and handoff action

uketori-in o onegai shimasuA receipt stamp, pleaseA possible request; follow the actual carrier process

Some deliveries require a signature, stamp, identity check, one-time code, payment, or nothing. Never give a code unless you have verified that it belongs to the expected delivery and the official process requests it.

Handle payment or damage without guessing

This lesson does not decide whether to accept, refuse, pay, or claim for a damaged parcel. Check the order and carrier’s current procedure before acting.

Service and safety boundary

Carrier procedures, no-contact options, payment methods, codes, and proof of receipt vary. Use the official tracking notice and your building’s safety rules. A delivery phrase is not proof that the visitor or parcel is genuine.

Complete the doorstep handoff

  • Verify carrier, parcel, and recipient before opening the door.
  • Use 少し待ってください for a brief safe delay.
  • Follow the actual handoff instruction instead of assuming a signature.
  • Stop and verify mismatched names, unexpected payment, or damage.

Handle the parcel before and after a missed handoff

If no one can receive the parcel, the problem changes from a doorstep exchange to a notice-and-redelivery task. The post-office lesson covers the sender’s earlier service, contents, and receipt decisions.

What does takuhai-bin desu mean?

宅配便です means “It is a parcel delivery.” It is only the visitor’s claim, so you do not need to open the door on that phrase alone.

Verify with どちらの配送会社ですか (“Which delivery company is it?”) or どなた宛てですか (“Who is it addressed to?”), compare the tracking notice and recipient name, and follow your building’s security procedure.

How do you ask a delivery driver to wait in Japanese?

Say 少し待ってください (sukoshi matte kudasai) for a brief, safe delay, then state your next action with 今、玄関に行きます (“I am coming to the entrance now”). If the room or name does not match, use この部屋ではありません or その名前の人はいません instead of accepting the parcel.

Try the real-world task

Receive one parcel at the door.

Ready means:

  • I can recognize that a delivery has arrived.
  • I can ask the driver to wait briefly.
  • I can confirm the name and receipt step.
